Nancy Drew Spin-Off Tom Swift Has Had A Series Order From The CW, Without Producing A Pilot

Nancy Drew was picked up for a second season, which aired in early 2021, and creators decided to launch the spin-off following its success.

Tom Swift appeared as a character in the second season of Nancy Drew, in the 15th episode titled ‘The Celestial Visitor’. He was played by Tian Richards, known for his roles in Dumplin’ and Burden,who is planned to return to play the titular character in the new spin-off.

LeVar Burton, famous for his roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Transformers: Rescue Bots, is also planned to star in the new series. In the Nancy Drew episode, he played Barclay, an artificial intelligence being Tom created when he was a child, who assists and supports him through various technologies.

The network ordered a pilot script off the back of this episode. Production company CBS Studios and Fake Empire will produce the series, having produced The CW’s Nancy Drew since it premiered on the channel in 2019. Fake Empire was also responsible for both the original Gossip Girl and the recent reboot.

Deadline described the premise of the new series: “Tom Swift follows the serialized adventures of its titular Black, gay, billionaire inventor (Richards) who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father.

“Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hell-bent on stopping him.

“Tom’s missions will require his genius and flair for innovation guided by love, romance, friendship and the mysteries of the universe yet-unsolved.”
